Exclusive Interview with videographer Conner Hunt aka Eyeofconner
What 3 things does anyone starting in your industry need to know?Three things someone in the media industry should know is that: 1. Don’t be scared to do free work at first to build yourself 2. Invest in yourself before you invest in anything else 3. Don’t take it personal when a client pays for someone cheaper.
What would you do differently if you were starting in your industry now?
What I would do differently is educate, educate, educate. Watch as many videos as I can to understand better. As well be more knowledgeable on the gear I need to elevate/scale 10x more. But mainly start a team would be the one thing I would do differently.
Which people or books have had the most influence on your growth and why?
Cole Bennett, Justin Odisho and Max Novak are three people who have had the most influence on my growth just because the information they put out there is just as important as the information you pay to get in college. All three of them have inspired me to develop my own style and elevate tremendously from the knowledge and skill set they have. It motivates me to grind harder everyday and learn something I didn’t know of the day before.
What would you say is the #1 key to success in pursing videography?
The #1 key to succeeding in being a videographer would be understanding your mistakes from old work and not making them again in new work. Ontop of staying consistent with releasing content, and loyal to the process of being great.
Talk about the biggest failure you’ve had. What did you learn from it?
Man oh man the biggest failure I’ve had would be getting robbed for my camera gear and being set up at a client shoot. I learned from that, that I can’t trust anybody at all no matter what they say ontop of realizing my life isn’t worth being put on the line when I hadn’t been paid yet. Being more protective of my energy and making sure everything is secure professionally on my part of doing business.
What has been your biggest success story in music and why do you think it was a success?
My biggest success would be working with Complex and Foot Action as an editor on the post production. It showed me that I have the skills to provide quality work for corporate companies.
What keeps you going when things get tough in your videography career?
What keeps me going during hard times throughout being a videographer is understanding that this hard time won’t last for long and that the L’s I have taken are only lessons not anything to destroy me. Hundreds of Ls are going to be worth that W is how I get through hard times and also knowing I could be lost and not know who I am. I am just thankful for God putting me in the position I am today at such a young age.
What made you pursue being a videographer full time?What made me pursue being a videographer full time would be the fact of escaping from a 9-5. I have always been a hustler before music videos I just always knew I had a bigger purpose in life than working a 9-5. My bestfriend died in a car crash in highschool and I remember seeing the picture I had took of him everywhere and I just knew I had an eye with the camera and capturing moments.
Would you stay independent or sign to a major label?I will always stay independent I never want to work for anyone. I only want to build partnerships and good relationships with genuine business minded people.
What projects are you working on for 2021 and beyond?
I am working on a lot more commercial projects, more business standard content and more high quality music videos incorporating a lot more valuable locations, sets and storylines. 2021 is the year for 100% growth and clarity.
